Food Waste and New Technology

Food waste is a huge global issue. We’re not just talking about not finishing a meal at home. It’s a $2.6 trillion dollar a year global issue.

A relatively new company is taking on that issue – it’s called Treasure8. It’s a company focused on systemically reducing food waste using the world’s most powerful, proprietary dehydration technologies.

Timothy Childs with Treasure8 was at recent USDA Outlook Forum and says the new freeze drying technology will make some incredible new food products.

So – what are they doing exactly? It’s a new form of dehydration that is energy and time efficient, naturally preserves practically all micronutrients, flavors, and color of fruits, vegetables, and shrinks them into nutrient-dense food stuffs—within one hour.

How will this help farmers? When the technology becomes widely available – it will allow farmers to dehydrate excess crops – assuring there is still a market for food that would otherwise go unsold and wasted.
