High school students tackle skilled trades, technology at Cambrian

Students from the Rainbow District School Board were invited to participate in two events at Cambrian College over February’s reading week.

The first was an opportunity to learn from industry professionals and the second a chance to test their ability in the area of skilled trades and technology.

Trades and Tech Day was held in collaboration with Skills Ontario, for First Nation, Métis and Inuit youth from Grades 9-12. Giving students the opportunity to meet, network and share a meal with community members working in skilled trades and technology.

Following that was the Rainbow Board’s Skills Competition, in which 100 students competed in 18 different competitions around the college. Winners will compete at Skills Ontario in Toronto May 4-6 as part of Team Sudbury.

“It’s always great to have high school students on our campus, and to introduce them to the skilled trades and what career options they can pursue,” said Renee Scott, Cambrian College director of student success and recruitment in a press release.

“All week, we’ve been showing these young men and women the various trades taught here at Cambrian and they’ve even been able to meet the professionals who have spent their careers working in high-paying jobs that are in demand across Sudbury and, in fact, the entire country.”
