New born baby survives corona virus oubreak

February 27th, 2020 — Wuhan China

Good news calms fears about the Corona Virus Outbreak today. A 20-day-old baby has recovered from the novel coronavirus after being born to a confirmed patient in Wuhan, the epicenter of the disease outbreak. After making a full recovery last Friday, the baby was released from the hospital. As of today, reports of the baby’s current health are positive. This is a big development in the prospect of public concern, given that a newborn’s immune system is far more susceptible to viruses and disease than adults who, develop antibodies over time. Normal adults develop natural immunity to cold like viruses and can fight off infection. The newborn is the youngest patient to have recovered from the virus in China so far, reported state media. She left the hospital on Friday after making a full recovery on her own without the help of medication.

In China, news media reports on the development:

The baby, known as Xiao Xiao, was transferred to Wuhan Children’s Hospital on the same day she was born, according to People’s Daily. She was found to have the virus shortly after. She had an infection in her respiratory system and minor myocardial damage, said Dr Zeng Lingkong, director of the Department of Neonatology at the hospital.

The girl’s symptoms were not obvious so doctors decided not to give her antibiotic medication and let her overcome the disease on her own.
‘She did not have obvious difficulties in breathing, did not cough or have fevers, therefore we only gave her treatment for her myocardial condition,’ Dr Zeng told state broadcaster for CCTV.

In the United States, there are 14 cases of the corona virus with no deaths reported. Just yesterday, during a press announcement, President Donald Trump announced an action plan to combat the virus. Bringing together leaders from homeland security and the center for disease control, the President assured the public that the Federal Government stands ready to respond if needed. The news of having no fatalities from the virus was not enough to calm the stock markets, which have been trending in the red for the last week. The Nasdaq currently sits at 8,746 with the New York Stock Exchange down to 12,817.  Shedding an average of 1,000 points each with a combined loss of around 1 trillion dollars in market value.

In other news, a 4 year old has also survived the Corona Virus:A four-year-old girl from China, admitted at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi, Malaysia after being infected by novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), has recovered and allowed to return home, a Health Ministry official said today.

She is the first of 10 patients in the country – nine of them Chinese nationals – to have been cured from the infection, New Strait Times of Malaysia reported. Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the girl, who was treated at an isolation ward since Jan 29, has been discharged from the hospital.

“The results of the 2019-nCoV detection test conducted twice on the patient turned out negative (of the novel coronavirus).
“She is now in good health and allowed to leave (discharged from the hospital).”

This showed that the 2019-nCoV infection is treatable and that patient can fully recover, similar to many other cases that have been reported in China. “Perception among the public that the 2019-nCoV is fatal (could not be treated) after one has been infected by the virus is certainly wrong,” said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement today.

Chinese health authorities had announced Monday that a total of 475 patients had been discharged from hospitals after recovery by Sunday.
The recovery of a 4 year old was originally Reported by Malaysia’s New Straits Times.
