South Carolina Deputy Fatally Shot

Sumter County, SC – A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot while he was serving an eviction notice on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 25 as deputies were serving an eviction notice at a home located in the area of Highway 521 and Four Bridges Road between Sumter and Dalzell, WLTX reported.

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis told reporters at a press briefing that 37-year-old Sumter County Sheriff’s Corporal Andrew Gillette was killed when the subject of the eviction notice opened fire on deputies.

Sheriff Dennis said Cpl. Gillette was shot in the chest and “died of wounds suffered in the line of duty.”

The sheriff said that suspect was fatally wounded when deputies returned fire.

None of the other deputies were injured in the exchange of gunfire, he said.

Sheriff Dennis said Cpl. Gillette was assigned to the Civil Process Division and serving eviction notices was a party of his daily duties.

The sheriff said Cpl. Gillette joined the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office in 2013.

He said the fallen hero is survived by his wife and 11-year-old son.
