Firefighters on scene of large blaze, thousands without power

Update: Manitoba Hydro is estimating power will be restored to around 4,000 East Kildonan customers around 10:30 a.m. Sunday after an early morning blaze near Lagimodiere Boulevard.

Earlier: The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is on the scene of a large fire Sunday morning.

Crews were called to the area of Phillip Lee Drive and Prairie Crocus Drive just off Lagimodiere Boulevard before 6 a.m.

Witnesses on the scene say it appears a new condo complex that was under construction is fully engulfed in flames.

Just after 7:00 a.m., Winnipeg police reported that they had joined WFPS in fighting the fire. They are asking the public to avoid the area and say road closures may be in effect.

Thousands of customers in the area, including Kildonan Crossing, Valley Gardens, and Harbourview South are also without power as a result.

There is currently no word on injuries, if any, or the cause of the fire.

More details to come.
