Man charged in rash of car break-ins

A Black Creek man faces multiple charges in connection to a rash of car break-ins in a Wilson neighborhood.

On Tuesday, Wilson police responded to a 1 a.m. call in the 100 block of West End Avenue regarding a person tampering with a vehicle. Officers spoke with a homeowner who had captured the perpetrator’s movements on a security camera system, according to authorities.

Officers began searching the area and found vehicles that had been broken into on the 1100 blocks of Anderson and Branch streets, Sgt. Steve Stroud said.

Stroud said officers discovered a shed had been broken into as well. Officials saw the suspect, who was later identified as 22-year-old William C. Cannady Jr., jumping fences in the area but were unable to detain him at that time, Stroud said.

A vehicle was then spotted leaving the area, and officers conducted a traffic stop and were able to identify the driver as Cannady due to the surveillance system, police said.

“Stolen property was also located along the path the suspect fled,” Stroud said.

Cannady was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, six counts of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, five counts of larceny, two counts of tampering with a vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer.

He received a $58,000 secured bond.

PREVENTION

As a reminder, police say it’s important for residents to make sure their car doors are locked and valuables are removed and out of sight.

Police say thieves often go from driveway to driveway in residential neighborhoods lifting car door handles to see if they are unlocked. It takes just seconds for thieves to get their hands on valuables, including guns, because it’s easy.

Police ask anyone with information on the recent car break-ins to call the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
