A multi-vehicle crash caused a massive fire that is blocking all northbound lanes of I-85 in Gwinnett County.
Large flames and thick black smoke could be seen billowing off the interstate near the Jimmy Carter Boulevard exit as police closed traffic in both directions.
The blaze was the result of a crash involving a tractor-trailer that left one person dead about 8 a.m., Gwinnett police said. As a precaution, people were evacuated from their vehicles and nearby businesses on the access roads.
Georgia Department of Transportation cameras appeared to show people standing on the side of the interstate as firefighters worked to put out the flames coming from the overturned tractor-trailer.
The fire is under control now, but still appears to be smoldering. Police reopened the southbound travel lanes just before 10 a.m.
Surface streets are still heavily affected, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported. Drivers are urged to use Buford Highway or Ga. 141, if possible.
