Breaking up isn’t an easy process as you work through the emotional side and all of the logistics that come with parting ways.
That includes a holiday; it may have seemed like a good idea when you were happy together months ago, but now it can seem like a huge headache. One which could prove expensive.
The silver lining is that just because you’re breaking up, that doesn’t mean you necessarily need to lose out on all of your cash.
There are some options for you whether you both want to cancel the holiday, or one of you still wants to go even if the other person isn’t going.
To give you a helping hand, we’ve put together a guide looking at what these options entail…
1. Cancelling the holiday
If neither of you want to go on holiday, check your travel insurance policy and contact your insurer as you may be covered for cancellations (they may only cover for specific reasons).
It means you will also be prepared to get any documents or proof your provider may need if you do make a claim.
Then, get in touch with your tour operator as soon as possible. They’re not legally entitled to offer you a refund, but most will try and help find a solution.
You may be subject to a cancellation fee – you and your ex can split the cost, and it’s likely to be significantly cheaper than leaving it and losing out on all of your cash.
You can also find out more about your rights in our guide to holiday cancellations.
2. One of you still wants to go
If one of you is still keen to go on the trip, then you may want to find someone to take the extra place.
Find someone you trust and who will be willing to pay you back for the cost of your half of the holiday.
Then, get in touch with your travel company to see if you can change the name on the booking. (This may incur a transfer fee which both you and the person you transfer the holiday to are jointly liable to pay).
Different tour companies have different rules, so get in touch as soon as possible. Often, they ask that the replacement guest meet the same requirements ie must be over 18, same travel dates etc.
Check your booking T&Cs too – if you booked a special deal you may not be able to transfer it over.
Booked your flights and hotel separately? Get in touch as soon as possible to see if you can transfer the names on the booking, otherwise you may have to look at cancelling.
