HAHIRA, Ga. – According to an alert from Valdosta Today readers and residents in the area, a man had barricaded himself inside an apartment complex in Hahira and was shooting off flares.

“I never saw so many cops and Hahira, they’ve got everything blocked off,” Hahira resident Jamie McDonald said.

Hahira Police Department Lt. Shannon Kingston reported to Valdosta Today at 8:56 p.m. that somewhere around 7:30 p.m. a man had in fact barricaded himself inside an apartment complex but had not shot at the police, but shot in a “confined space while we were trying to serve a warrant.”

The location of the incident, which is still active at 8:59 p.m. is 104 N. Church St., Jordan Apartments in Hahira. “Lowndes County SWAT and hostage negotiators are on the scene assisting,” Lt. Kingston said.

A good portion of Hahira has reportedly been blocked off during this incident.

Hahira resident Jamie McDonald says that many people are sitting in the park watching from afar to see if they can see what it going on.

“SWAT is there using tear gas now,” McDonald told Valdosta Today.

Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said at 9:06 p.m., “We got a situation where a black male who had some warrants and officers went to serve them and he shot a flare at an officer but he’s okay. He barricaded himself up in some apartments at the 122 and 41, had a crossbow and flare gun.”

Sheriff Paulk was not aware of any live shooter at Hahira Harvey’s.

“He (the perpetrator whose name has not yet been released) has gunshot wounds from officers because he shot at them,” Sheriff Paulk said from the scene. “They’re loading him up on the ambulance now.”

This is an active story.
