A stretch of a busy Chula Vista street was shut down Wednesday afternoon after a forklift operator at a recycling business broke open a small natural gas pipe, authorities said.
The incident happened about 2:35 p.m. at the business on Main Street near Broadway, a police lieutenant said. Authorities briefly shut down a stretch of the road while crews addressed the problem.
According to San Diego Gas & Electric, an employee of the business was using a forklift when it struck and broke a ¾-inch natural gas riser. Crews had the flow of gas under control shortly after 4 p.m.
The recycling business was the only customer affected by the break, and it could see gas restored Wednesday evening.
