Reports of brown water near site of Forest Avenue water main break

Several households in the Deering neighborhood may be experiencing brown water coming out of their faucets on Friday evening due to an earlier water main break on Forest Avenue and Ashmont Street, according to the Portland Water District. A separate leak happened on Lawn Avenue. One person living on Orkney Street said they had dark brown water coming out of their faucet. According to the Portland Water District, dark water commonly comes out of faucets during times when high volumes of water move through the system and stir up sediment, such as a water main break or when a fire hydrant is used. Officials at the Portland Water District recommend flushing the water a couple times and waiting, because the water typically clears within a few hours. They also added that if the problem persists into the next day to call their emergency number at 207-761-8300.
