Leona Mitchell, professor of practice in the University of Pittsburgh School of Computing and Information (SCI), is set to speak at the annual RedChairPGH “Sit With Me” event on Nov. 21, held to promote gender diversity in technology.
Mitchell is founding director of the Professional Institute at SCI. The Professional Institute offers continuing education programs in cybersecurity for working professionals.
RedChairPGH was established in 2015 “as a grassroots effort in response to troubling statistics in the tech workforce that showed a declining participation rate for women in computer science.”
Said Mitchell, “Diversity helps deliver better solutions to tough problems. When women are not at the table to solve these problems, we are in essence abdicating and allowing others to shape our future, our daughters’ futures and our grandchildren’s futures. Given the importance of technology and future decisions based on technology, women should be at the table, developing the solutions.”
