If you want to try it for yourself, you’re in luck – as it is in the UK.

The flight runs between the islands of Westray and Papa Westray, two of the islands in Orkney, Scotland.

It has been measured as the shortest scheduled passenger flight by the Guinness World Records, having first flown in 1967 and welcomed the one millionth passenger in 2016.

Operated by Loganair, the route is just 1.7 miles long, and has seen record times of just 47 seconds (depending on the winds).

The reason for the short flight is due to the rough seas.

According to The Points Guy’s Daniel Ross, the alternative route is on a “fisherman-like boat”.

He explained: “The boat rocked so violently from side to side I was sure we were going to capsize.

“Spending 20 minutes on that boat on a ‘calm day’ was enough to make me never want to set foot on another boat again.”

He also explained that the plane is mainly used by friends and family who live on the islands.

Daniel said: “There was just enough time for a quick selfie before banking a hard right and descending into Papa Westray a mere minute or so later.”

To try the flight out for yourself,  however, is a bit difficult.

The journey to Papa Westray involves travelling from London to Aberdeen, followed by Aberdeen to Kirkwall, and then Kirkwall to Westray.

Each route is done by flight, either with Flybe or Loganair.

Thankfully you don’t need to be at the airport much before the short flight – with the recommended time being just 10 minutes before departure.

However, it is a small plane with just eight seats, along with the pilot and co-pilot chairs.

And don’t expect to take on your hand luggage, as even small carry on bags are put into the cargo compartment due to the lack of space.

Flights between Kirkwall and Papa Westray, stopping at Westray along the way, start from £37.

The longest direct flight in the world recently took place, with Qantas testing a 19-hour New York to Sydney flight.

Three Orkey islands went up for sale last year – for just £200,000.
