Tiger Woods is seven holes away from immortalizing himself yet again in the PGA Tour records books.
He holds a 3-stroke lead through three-and-a-half rounds at the Zozo Championship, the first official PGA Tour event ever hosted in Japan. Torrential rain forced event organizers to postpone the second round on Friday, resulting in Woods playing a total of 29 holes before darkness fell on Sunday in Japan.
A win this week would give Woods his 82nd career PGA Tour win, tying him with Sam Snead for the all-time record that has stood for 54 years. Woods and the rest of the players will resume the tournament at 7:30 a.m. Monday locally, which is 6:30 p.m. ET Sunday in the U.S.
Wood has led after each round and he now sits at 18-under for the week with Japan-native Hideki Matsuyama in second place at 15-under.
That’s after Woods shook off the rust in his opening round, which was his first PGA Tour round in two months after he had a minor procedure on his knee.
“I didn’t start off very good this week, bogeyed my first three holes, but after that it’s been pretty good,” Woods told The Golf Channel after Sunday’s round. “Today’s been a long day in the saddle and early wakeup call tomorrow morning and get back after it again.”
Even after Woods rallied to shoot a 6-under 64 on Thursday, he had to wait an extra day to start his second round because of the weather. It got so bad, he wound up stranded in a Domino’s Pizza with fellow golfers Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson.
But come Monday morning, the only focus will be finishing off victory No. 82.
“I’m going to try to win, there’s no doubt about it,” Woods said. “I’ve got to do what I need to do. I have a job to do tomorrow.”
