Social media users vent angst, call for state-of-the-art technology | Trichy News

Even as most people were glued to TV screens on Saturday for updates on the efforts to save two-year-old Sujith Wilson trapped in a borewell in Nadukattupatti near Manapparai, others took to social media to voice their angst on the issue. #SaveSujith and #PrayforSurjith trended on Twitter, with exasperated users venting their ire on the inability and lack of technology to rescue the child.
Followers of Tamil Nadu Weatherman, a Facebook group typically flooded with questions on rain, for a change batted for ‘no rains’ in Nadukattupatti village. Shahida Rafi, a Facebook user, posted on the Tamil Nadu Weatherman page, “Every time, we ask for rain. Now I ask God not to give rain in Trichy (till the boy is rescued).”
Many Twitter users sought to criticise the authorities over the recurring incidents of borewell accidents across the country, with children being the regular victims.
One Twitter handle said, “Don’t pray for Sujith, act for Sujith,” underscoring the need to develop technology or gadgets for rescuing children trapped in borewells.
As on Saturday evening, #PrayforSurjith and #PrayforSujith were trending at least for 9hours pan-India and Tamil Nadu on a par with “Happy Diwali” wishes.
Some Twitter users expressed their anger on the delay in saving the child by highlighting the advancements made in space research and natural gas exploration but the lack of state-of-the-art tech to save people trapped in borewells.
Some anxious social media users also shared their ideas with pictures and videos to rescue Sujith by using pressure gauge and magic ball methods, usually adopted by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
They also shared excerpts from 2017 movie ‘Aramm’, highlighting the difficulties in rescuing a girl trapped in a borewell, and pitched for the need to close abandoned wells that pose a threat to children.
