Health department collects unused medications on drug take-back day

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Nearly 131 cars came through the La Crosse County Health Department to drop off a total of 196 pounds of unused prescription medication for drug take-back day.

Old prescription medication should not be thrown in the trash because it could end up in a landfill or garbage where people can find and consume or sell them.

“This is really important for our community because it really helps with the potential diversion of pain killers or opioids being diverted or stolen or misused within our community,” Alliance to HEAL Health Educator Al Bliss said, “So it helps to reduce those drug related deaths and drug related hospitalizations.”

Bliss said it’s also important not to flush old medication down the drain because it could end up in watery systems and contaminate water quality. Out dated medication should get properly disposed of as well because it is not meant to be consumed one its expired.
