At the tail end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a group of local nurses is teaming up with a health ministry to raise funds and bring awareness to local health initiatives.

Caring Community Nurses is a local nonprofit that encourages preventative care, offering mammograms, cholesterol and diabetes screenings to people who need them, said Greta Peterson. Their focus, however, is on breast cancer screening, and with a mobile mammography bus, they provide people with dozens of tests a week.

Peterson is a member of the group, and said her victory over cancer pushed her to be a stronger advocate for preventative medicine.

“Even though I knew the importance of it, until I had someone stand in front of me saying ‘You have cancer,’ it didn’t click,” she said.

Caring Community Nurses has resources to help people get screenings and medications for free or at reduced cost, but Peterson said they operate off of donations. Today at 5 p.m., they’re teaming up with Dunham Temple CME Health Ministry to host Gospel Songfest. Located at Dunham Temple CME Church at 110 Gilliam St., Greenwood, the concert will feature the music of The Golden Stars, Mt. Zion AME All Male Chorus, Divine Adoration, Flint Hill Baptist Church’s choir and the Sensational Gospel Eagles.

The two groups are asking for a $5 donation, or whatever attendees can give, to help the groups buy literature, displays and other items for health-related promotional events in the area.
