2020 three-star guard Tony Perkins commits to Iowa

2020 three-star guard Tony Perkins commits to Iowa

Iowa basketball received good news on Sunday when Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence North 2020 three-star shooting guard Tony Perkins announced that he has committed to Iowa.

Perkins, a 6-foot-3 guard, also held offers from Ball State, Bradley, Toledo, and others, but ultimately ended up picking the Hawkeyes during his official visit to Iowa City this weekend.

Iowa assistant coach Sherman Dillard visited Perkins’ school last week, and extended him an offer. The Iowa staff has kept an eye on Perkins since July.

“Amazing,” Perkins told HawkeyeInsider.com about his official visit. “Some of the highlights were the facilities and the love the community brings to Hawkeye basketball.”

Iowa graduate transfer Bakari Evelyn was Perkins’ host over the weekend. The two of them bonded well and seemed to have an instant connection during the visit.

We just played video games and talked about our basketball life from where we started till present time,” Perkins said.

He also had the chance to watch Iowa practice. But one of the main highlights for him was sitting down with Hawkeye head coach Fran McCaffery and going over film. McCaffery showed him how the offense would fit his up-tempo playing style. But at the end of the day, he just wanted to go where he felt welcomed and would have the best opportunity.

“The message they gave me was they want me to come here and be a part of our community.”

Perkins is the second commit for the Hawkeyes in the 2020 class, and joins three-star point guard Ahron Ulis. Iowa is also working hard for four-star forward Xavier Foster and three-star center Josh Ogundele in the 2020 cycle.

247Sports’ Trevor Andershock has seen Perkins many times throughout the course of his high school career, and broke down what he brings to the table previously.

“He’s not that thin for a high school player and has a good frame to easily add muscle before stepping on a college court,” wrote 247Sports’ Trevor Andershock. “I’m a big Perkins fan. He’s a true 6’3″ with athleticism and toughness. At the moment, he is best in transition and as a one on one slasher. His outside shooting is streaky but he’s tough to stop when it is going. He projects to defend either guard position as the next level as well.”

Perkins fast-paced play should translate to Iowa immediately. The Hawkeye backcourt is looking like it will have one of its most athletic groups in recent years with guys like Perkins, freshman point guard Joe Toussaint and 2020 point guard Ahron Ulis.

According to 247Sports, Perkins is a three-star prospect, the No. 334 player nationally, the No. 78 shooting guard, and the No. 11 player in the state of Indiana’s 2020 class.
