PORT ANGELES – Ground will be broken Friday on a new performing arts center and convention space on the Port Angeles waterfront.

Construction fencing is already up around the area off Oak street that will house the new Field Arts and Events Hall.

Facility Development Director Jessica Hernandez says the ground breaking itself is not open to the public, but an event at 8 pm that evening at nearby Barhop Taproom is.

“We’re going to have a groundbreaking ceremony. And then after that we’re going to have a community celebration event. Our good friends and neighbors over at Barhop are going to be helping us host an event from eight o’clock until 10 o’clock there where the whole community is invited to celebrate.”

When finished, Hernandez says the center will feature a state-of-the-art auditorium with seating of about 500 people. It will also have extra space that could be used for conferences and other events.

“It’s large. So if we were to do a sit-down dinner, and we will have a full catering kitchen, say a sit-down dinner or a sit-down lunch, and that event space can also be broken into three separate breakout spaces with acoustic walls that, partitions, that break the space up. So that’s what a lot of conference hosts like to have as those breakout areas and they’ll each have full AV potential.”

The late Donna M. Morris left a gift of over $9 million in 2016 to be used specifically for the design, construction, and ongoing operation of a performing arts center in Port Angeles.

Developers hope to have it completed in the next two years.
