Aztecs freshman QB Joe Green out for season after breaking collarbone again

San Diego State true freshman quarterback Joe Green will be out the remainder of the season after fracturing his collarbone in practice for the second time in the past three months. The original injury healed on its own. Green had surgery this time to repair it.

“He re-broke his collarbone in practice the other day,” SDSU head coach Rocky Long said. “He got pushed and hit on the ground, so they operated on him. I think he’s out of the hospital, but he’s still in recovery. … They determined this time they better put a plate in it, help it heal to be strong.”

Green, a 6-foot-4, 205-pounder from Sammamish, Wash., was originally injured during the first week of fall practice in early August and wore a sling on his left (non-throwing) shoulder during his recovery. He returned to practice one month after the injury, but he remained fifth on the depth chart and did not figure to play this season. He should be completely recovered well before spring practice begins.

“It’s not a setback because he’s redshirting,” Long said. “In fact, he was on the scout team, so he was running other peoples’ offense, not ours.”

Green played at Washington’s Skyline High. He is a pro-style quarterback who has passed for 5,100 yards and 44 touchdowns during te 2017-18 seasons for the Spartans. He also rushed for 218 yards in 2018 with four TDs.
