Suspect in break-ins fatally shoots himself while fleeing police

ST. PETERSBURG — The resident of a home stabbed a man trying to break in early Monday, detectives said.

The stabbing victim was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

He was trying to break into a home in the 4000 block of 68th Street N, north of 38th Avenue N, when he was stabbed about 4:30 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.

The house is on a dead-end road and the Sheriff’s Office blocked access Monday morning.

A trail of 15 to 20 evidence markers stretched from the driveway of home, about half a block down the street and around a corner, ending near a car parked along the road.

Sheriff’s forensics investigators were collecting evidence at the scene and placing it in paper bags.
