A Texas mother was sentenced to six years in prison for faking her son’s illnesses and causing him to get medical treatments and surgeries he did not need.

Kaylene Bowen-Wright was sentenced Friday in a Dallas courtroom after she pleaded guilty in August to recklessly causing injury to a child.

Investigators said Bowen-Wright’s son, Christopher Bowen, spent the first eight years of his life in and out of the hospital because she claimed he had a number of health problems such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, heart issues and seizures, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

Christopher, who is now 10, was exposed to radiation, contracted sepsis multiple times and suffered blood clots from the unnecessary treatments, the NBC station reports. Bowen-Wright had doctors insert a feeding tube and had him using a wheelchair.

The little boy visited hospitals more than 320 times and had 13 surgeries.

He was removed from his mother’s home in 2017 after a hospital in Dallas told Child Protective Services that Christopher was not sick as she had claimed. NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reports that Bowen-Wright seemingly suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental health condition where a caregiver makes up symptoms of an illness for a person in their care.

Bowen-Wright initially faced up to 20 years in prison.

Ryan Crawford, Christopher’s father, testified Friday that he lost years with his son as Bowen-Wright took him back and forth to the hospital.

“It was too much manipulation, too many lies,” he said, the NBC station reports. “I didn’t know what to do.”

Christopher is now in the care of his father and is said to be happy and thriving.
