DE Jacolbe Cowan commits to Ohio State

The Buckeyes have added to what was already one of the country’s top 2020 recruiting classes as defensive end Jacolbe Cowan from Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day has announced a commitment to Ohio State.

Cowan made his announcement in the corner of the the Providence Day football field right after Providence Day lost to Arden (N.C.) Christ School 14-13. Cowan had a video presentation that was used as part of his announcement.

“Thank you for welcoming me with open arms,” Cowan said after announcing he is a Buckeye.

The 6-foot-5 and 262-pound Cowan is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is the country’s No. 163 overall prospect, the No. 15 defensive tackle, and the No. 7 prospect in North Carolina.

Cowan has been recruited by Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson and Kevin Wilson who recruits the area Cowan is from for the Buckeyes. Cowan has been recruited by the Buckeyes as a defensive end.

Cowan has a list of 30 plus offers that in addition to Ohio State included Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Penn State and Michigan before he picked the Buckeyes. In addition to Ohio State, Cowan visited a number of other schools including South Carolina and Tennessee as well as the in-state schools.

Cowan made an official visit to Ohio State during the Buckeyes’ June 15 recruiting weekend.

“It was an amazing experience,” Cowan told Bucknuts at that time. “I had high expectations going into the visit and Ohio State exceeded them.”

Cowan has been very impressed with Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, and he has a very high regard for Johnson.

“Coach Day has a passion for his players,” Cowan told Bucknuts. “ And coach J, I already had a great relationship with him. Coach J is well respected by his former players and all over the world.”

Cowan joins an Ohio State 2020 recruiting class that was already the country’s No. 3 recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite team recruiting rankings. He becomes the third class of 2020 defensive lineman to commit to the Buckeyes. Day and Johnson have been looking to sign at least three and possibly four class of 2020 defensive linemen and are hosting another one, Tyler Baron from Tennessee, on an official visit this weekend as the Buckeyes host Michigan State in a primetime game on Saturday.
