MTA Tests Ultra-Wideband Technology on L Train

NEW YORK – New wireless signal technology is being tested on the L train that could make the subways run more efficiently.

The MTA says Ultra-Wideband is expected to provide better train positioning and location accuracy.

That could eventually allow trains to run closer together and increase service.

The technology would also let riders use their phones between stations.

Ultra-Wideband was tested on the F and G lines in Brooklyn a few years ago.

The MTA has budgeted money in its new Capital Plan to resignal six subway lines, but wireless technology could make that work cheaper and faster.
