Oxford Circus Tube incident: Hero men risk lives to save commuter after track fall

Two hero commuters risked their lives to pull another man to safety after he collapsed onto Central Line tracks just seconds before a tube train arrived.

The rush-hour incident was witnessed by hundreds of horrified commuters on the packed platform at Oxford Circus station this morning.

Shocked witnesses described how the “dazed” man was trapped under the middle track.

The brave duo jumped onto the tracks and lifted him to safety whilst others ‘screamed in panic’.

One witness said: “I was about 10-13ft away from where the man had fallen.

“I was stood at the edge of the yellow line so I had a clear view of the entire track.

“I heard gasps then watched the man almost flip onto the track.

“He was crumpled below it. There was a lot of panic in a very crowded platform but people were very quick to hit the alarm, shout to stop the train. There had been a 10 minute delay. The man who climbed down was very brave and some others helped him and the man climb back up.

“When the man who fell was back on the platform he soon left.  We were then told to leave and there understandably a lot of panic and confusion. I was in shock when I left the station but was able to calm myself.”

Another commuter said: “I was on the Central Line going west when I saw someone on the tracks and everyone started screaming.

“Some brave guy jumped on the tracks and got them off.

“People were just shouting to alert the trains and a guy jumped before the alarms had been set off. “

Another commuter tweeted: “Just witnessed a guy collapse onto the tube tracks at Oxford Circus just as tube was due! He was right under the middle track, dazed & couldn’t move. Panic &screaming from everyone! Kudos to the two guys who jumped down and lifted him back onto the platform. Hope the guy is ok!.

London Underground staff evacuated people for a short while before the station was reopened.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.15 to reports of a person who fell onto the tracks.

“A man has been removed but we have officers on the scene checking them, alongside the London Ambulance Service.”
