Lizzie Deignan has been named in the British women’s elite team for the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire.

Former world champion Deignan, 30, and national champion Alice Barnes will compete in the 150km road race, starting in Bradford on 28 September.

Deignan’s Women’s Tour success in June was her first title since giving birth to her daughter, Orla, in 2018.

“It will be extra special as it’s on home roads and a chance to race in front of friends and family,” she said.

Deignan, who hails from Otley, will be competing on familiar territory as she aims to replicate her 2015 triumph in the road race.

Barnes’ sister Hannah, Lizzy Banks, Nikki Juniper and Anna Henderson have also been named in Britain’s road race team.

Barnes who is also the reigning national time trial champion, will partner European bronze medallist Hayley Simmonds in the 30km time trial, which starts in Ripon on 24 September.

The British squad has also been confirmed for the inaugural mixed relay team time trial, with the championships from 22-29 September on British soil for the first time since 1982.

John Archibald, Dan Bigham and Harry Tanfield will lead out Lauren Dolan, Anna Henderson and Joss Lowden on the 14km course in Harrogate.

The relay takes place on Sunday, 22 September, with live coverage on the BBC.
