BREAKING: Ft. Rucker identifies soldier who died during training | WDHN

FORT RUCKER, Ala. (WDHN) — Fort Rucker’s Public Affairs Office has released the name of the soldier who died during training Sunday.

“First Lt. William B. Pickel, 30, assigned to 1st Aviation Brigade, has been identified as the Soldier who died during training on Sunday after being medically evacuated to Southeast Health Medical Center,” the release states.

Pickel, a native of Cleveland, Tennessee, began having health problems while in survival training, prompting an airlift to Southeast Health.

He died at the hospital around 9 p.m. Sunday.

“Fort Rucker officials are deeply saddened by the loss of this outstanding Soldier,” the release states. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. The next of kin were notified and a casualty assistance team is currently providing assistance to the family.”

Pickel served in the U.S. Army since 2007, having been deployed to combat in Iraq and Afganistan during his career.

His cause of death is still unknown.
