The ATEC Animation Lab won a Bronze Remi Award at Houston’s International Film Festival, WorldFest Houston, this summer for their short animated film, Drift, in the category of CGI/Mixed Media. The film was directed by 2018 fall graduate Annie Fisher and 2019 spring graduate Rachel Killingsworth and was part of the updated Animation Lab course developed by ATEC Senior Lecturers Monika Salter and Kara Oropallo.
ATEC Studio LabSynthE presented One Breath Poem, Telephone Edition at RE:Sound: Sound, Media, and Art—Theories, Histories, Practices for Media Arts History (MAH) at Aalborg University, Denmark this August. Murilo Paiva Homsi traveled and installed the work for the lab, and assisted interactions with the piece during the reception and symposium. While there, he also presented “Listening to and Through Silence,” written by David Adelman with LabSynthE.
The Second Edition of ATEC Associate Professor xtine burrough’s book Foundations of Digital Art and Design with Adobe Creative Cloud was published by New Riders on the AIGA Voices that Matter Design Press this summer. The first edition of the book has been adopted in design classrooms at more than 90 universities across North America.
In this second edition, you will find a new chapter on prototyping, co-authored with ATEC Clinical Associate Professor Cassini Nazir.
Foundations of Digital Art and Design, Second Edition fuses design fundamentals and software training into one cohesive approach.
All students of digital design and production — whether learning in a classroom or on their own — need to understand the basic principles of design. These principles are often excluded from books that teach software. Foundations of Digital Art and Design reinvigorates software training by integrating design exercises into tutorials that fuse design fundamentals and core Adobe Creative Cloud skills.
The result is a comprehensive design learning experience organized into five sections that focus on vector art, photography, image manipulation, typography, and effective work habits for digital artists. Design topics and principles include: Bits, Dots, Lines, Shapes, Unity, Rule of Thirds, Zone System, Color Models, Collage, Appropriation, Gestalt, The Bauhaus Basic Course Approach, Continuity, Automation, and Revision.
In July, ATEC Associate Professor Dean Terry presented six new live performance works by his group Therefore at The Latino Cultural Center as part of Medianale 2019. The performance featured several new collaborators including Sammy “Rat” Rios and ATEC MFA alum artist Liz Trosper. The pieces made use of Terry’s recent creative and technical research into MIDI triggered live video. This method allows video clips to be played and manipulated like audio. The critical piece highlighted the singing and whistling talents of Rios in a duet with a video version of herself, played live by Terry. Stills of the work can be seen on Instagram @therefore and video documentation will be posted in the fall.
ATEC Assistant Professor Olivia Banner accepted an invitation to serve as a Commissioner for Governing Health Futures 2030: Growing Up in a Digital World, hosted by the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies in Geneva with publication support from The Lancet. The group will meet in Berlin, New Delhi, and Geneva over the next three years to craft policy recommendations for the governance of digital health, algorithmic processes, and AI, with a particular focus on children and the social determinants of health.

In celebration of The University of Texas at Dallas’ 50th Anniversary, ATEC Creative Operations Specialist Garrett Chace was one of 5 UT Dallas Alumni selected to showcase artwork in the SP/N Gallery exhibition titled Picture This: An Alumni Show.
ATEC MFA Alumni Chelsea Brtis, Class of 2019, has been appointed as Adjunct Faculty with the Department of Communication Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University.
ATEC PhD Student Mohammed Mizanur Rashid presented a paper titled “Civic Engagement and Digital Media Literacy: The Role of ‘Keyboard Warriors’ in Social Activism and Political Efficacy” at the 2019 National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) conference in Washington D.C.
ATEC Undergraduate Student Landon Cheatham secured a Motion Graphics internship with FC Dallas Major League Soccer & Toyota Stadium for the fall 2019 semester. Landon will be creating motion graphics and animations for FC Dallas & Toyota Stadium concerts and events to be displayed through LED boards, television commercials, and social media.
