Nearly 50,000 fans attend USWNT friendly against Portugal, breaking attendance record

Even months after the U.S. women’s national team’s win at the World Cup in France, the team is still drawing massive crowds.

There were 49,504 fans at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Thursday night for the USWNT’s friendly against Portugal, breaking the record for the largest crowd for a standalone friendly in team history.

The previous record for a USWNT standalone friendly was set in 2015 during their victory tour after that World Cup win. The team had 44,028 fans in attendance for their match against Costa Rica at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thursday’s game marked the second time in USWNT history with more than 40,000 fans.

The team’s connections to Philadelphia run deep, too. Not only is Carli Lloyd — who has drawn immense NFL interest in recent weeks — from the Philadelphia area, but USWNT star Julie Ertz is married to Eagles tight end Zach Ertz.

The USWNT cruised past Portugal on Thursday night, too, picking up a 4-0 win to mark their 15th consecutive win — a feat the team hasn’t accomplished since 1996.

Lloyd had an assist and scored in the second half, which marked her first goal in Philadelphia, while Allie Long, Morgan Brian and Tobin Heath all found the back of the net to push the USWNT to the win.

Thursday’s match in Philadelphia was the second of the USWNT’s victory tour. More than 37,000 fans attended their match against Ireland at the Rose Bowl in Southern California earlier this month. The United States has three games left, one in Minnesota next week, one in Charlotte in October and the final one in Chicago.
