Wheat farmers gathered Friday to discuss and look for new and improved wheat varieties and technology, with the conversation becoming more important than ever because of the weather’s dramatic impact on the industry.”About everything that could go wrong has, so that’s just the way it has worked this year,” Jimmie Musick said.The weather has been consistently inconsistent, as Oklahoma has seen extremes when it comes to rain and sun.”The most certain thing about our culture is the uncertainty of it. That’s just they way it works,” Musick said.Oklahoma legislators have been working on wheat farmers’ behalf on the state and national level.”Sen. Inhofe voted for a 2018 farm bill that — I was there when the president signed the farm bill and got to meet the president and shake his hand,” Musick said.Although Inhofe wasn’t at the meeting, he sent a representative.”We appreciate that because he’s very concerned about the farmers across the country,” Musick said. Musick told KOCO 5 that farmers should get some relief from the 2018 bill soon.”They think the first payments might be the last of August, and two other payments later in the year,” Musick said. “Those payments go directly to the farmers to help offset challenges.”
