Eat This and Live! By Don Colbert, MD

“Eat This And Live!” by Don Colbert, MD is a guide on making simple food choices to lead to a healthier lifestyle. It’s an easy book to read with plentiful full color photographs, side bars, nutritional information, and a load of practical advice on healthy eating. I enjoyed reading it, and even though a lot of the advice and recommendations were familiar to me due to reading about and living a healthy lifestyle, I still enjoyed this book and found it useful as we continue to try and eat healthy.

If you are familiar with Dr. Con Colbert, you know he wrote the New York Times best selling book, “The Seven Pillars of Health” as well as “Toxic Relief” and the Bible Cure series. Colbert does include some biblical references in this book, but not very many. Its primary focus is on food choices for health.

He discusses living food vs. dead food, how your body is a temple, and what the bible says about food in the first three chapters of the book. From then on, it’s all about food and what foods to avoid and what foods to eat.

He writes very clearly and explains why to avoid or why to eat certain foods. He differentiates between foods he recommends you never eat, and those to eat with caution. Beverages and what you should drink are also included.

There are even sections on shopping, storing and preparing food, smart choices when dining out (including specific dishes that are more healthy at certain restaurants such as Subway, Quiznos, Outback Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Applebee’s, Chili’s, Cracker Barrel, Perkins, and a few others. However, please note the are only a couple of approved selections at a few of these places, and the book does not have a complete list of foods served at restaurants), and tips for healthy kids. It really is a great little book on eating nutritiously and staying healthy. The colorful layout makes it more interesting to read than plain old black and white text, and the side bars and extras throughout were interesting and helpful.

Overall, it’s just a great little book for anyone who wants to eat more nutritious foods in order to feel better and live longer. I plan to peek at it now and then when I’m helping plan healthy meals for our family. Because really, not matter how good a book is, the key is using the advice Colbert provides to eat better, feel better, and live longer.
