Healthy Over 40 – 3 Tips to Losing Weight

Staying healthy and fit once you have reached 40 becomes more daunting and at times seems like an uphill battle as your energy declines and your metabolism slows down. Gaining weight is usually the outcome, and this affects adversely your health and overall well being. How can you break this downward cycle and stay healthy and fit over 40?

There are three key areas to focus on to attain your goal of staying healthy over 40 – your mind, the food you choose, and exercise.

Mind – Being healthy and fit over 40 can be attainable for nearly everyone, but 90% of the battle is in your mind. Coming up with excuses as to why you cannot eat better and find time to exercise is easy, but finding solutions is really the hardest part. Why? Because it takes discipline – scheduling, planning ahead and overcoming excuses. Yes, we all have busy lives, but our health will impact the quality of our lives and really should be at the forefront of our concern. Disciplining our mind to think "healthy" is the key element in being successful.

Food – Once over 40, your energy level declines, so choosing foods that will give you the energy you need without giving you empty calories is important. The key is to prepare ahead, because if you have to grab something, it is usually full of fat and lacking the vitamins and minerals that are essential for energy. Having healthy snacks that give you a quick boost when needed, such as a handful of nuts, can help you immeasurably. It is also important to "read" your body to know what foods work best for you and which ones do not.

Exercise – The best way to boost your metabolism is to exercise. Whatever type of exercise you choose, whether going to the gym or simply walking, the key to success is being consistent. Making a reasonable schedule in advance and posting it where you can see it frequently will help remind and encourage you to continue. Your exercise routine needs to be attainable, or it will be useless.

Staying healthy and fit over 40 is attainable if you focus on three areas – your mind, food and exercise. If you train your mind to think "healthy", then choosing the right type of food and being consistent in some type of physical activity, will fall into place easily.
