Group M hires News Corp's Cameron King to lead technology and transformation

News Corp’s former managing director of digital revenue, Cameron King, has joined WPP’s Group M as its first chief technology and transformation officer.

The new appointment comes 16 months after the group’s head of operations and technology, Tim Whitfield, left the business.

King will sit on the Group M leadership team

King will provide consultancy services to Group M’s clients on digital transformation, organisational change management and business optimisation activities.

He will also lead the media group’s strategy on digital, technology, and data, and have oversight of its subsidiaries and platforms Xasis, Finecast and M Platform.

Group M noted King’s credentials – including 10 years at News Corp and time as the chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Australia board – saying he is a leading digital expert in Australia, and highly regarded across the industry.

“Cam is one of the smartest digital operators in Australia. He’s passionate about measurement standards and transparency, digital transformation and marketing automation. His values align perfectly with ours at Group M and we are excited to welcome him into the group to enhance our digital and tech offering to provide our clients with even more firepower to navigate the growing complexity they face in media and marketing and drive business growth,” Group M’s CEO Mark Lollback said.

King’s appointment, Lollback said, was a significant step for WPP’s media investment arm.

“We know digital transformation, technology, data, and marketing automation are top priorities for marketers, and the chief technology and transformation officer will play a vital role in giving our clients competitive advantage,” he said.

“This marks a gear-change in Group M’s already market-leading to deliver digital, technology and data solutions for our clients in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment.”

King said he was looking forward to getting started.

“Starting the next phase of my career at GroupM, the world’s largest media investment company, and an organisation dedicated to combining the power of media, digital, technology and data to drive client growth is an exciting prospect.

“Clients want business partners that can help them navigate the complex media and technology ecosystem and provide consultancy services on digital transformation all the way through from strategy to implementation and delivery. I’m looking forward to getting started and working with Group M agencies to deliver that.”
