Graeme Souness believes Harry Maguire will be an ‘outstanding’ signing for Manchester United.

The Red Devils have reached an agreement to sign England defender Maguire from Leicester City for £80million – a world record fee for a defender.

Maguire will become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s third summer signing following the deals for Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Souness, reacting to Manchester United’s record-breaking move, told Sky Sports: ‘Everyone knows United are desperate to get back to the top of the Premier League.

‘There’s a premium paid normally for Manchester United but this time I think there’s a premium on the premium.

‘But Harry Maguire is a top player and, at 26, has eight years left at the top in him providing he doesn’t get any injuries.

‘He has outstanding quality. He can defend, he’s great on the ball and has great presence. He gets goals, too.

‘I think it’s a great buy.’

Maguire, who is expected to complete his medical at Manchester United this weekend, will become the most expensive defender in history.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk previously held that record but Souness has refused to say Manchester United have paid over the odds for Maguire.

‘£80m? It’s not for me to say it’s too much,’ the former Premier League defender added.

‘That’s how much he cost, they were prepared to pay and they’ve got him. I think he will be outstanding for Manchester United.’
