Car manufacturers begin implementing back seat reminder technology

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) – The news has featured stories of children being left in hot cars on more than one occasion. Now, manufacturers are taking steps to try and stop that.

Many new model Chevy cars, for example, have rear seat reminders. They alert the driver to check the back seat for anything they may have forgotten.

“Once the back door has been opened, that’ll activate the back seat reminder, so it will come up on the DIC above the steering wheel here,” says Mike Simila, a sales consultant at Fox Motors of Negaunee. “As you can see when the vehicles shut off, when you open the door the rear seat reminder comes on to look in the rear seat.”

Simila says many customers come in and ask for features like this when they’re buying a car.
