Almost-thief arrested for using van, sledgehammer to break into stores – Story

Surveillance video shows a thief ramming a van into a local business, before busting through a window to get inside and steal. That’s not the only break-in that suspect is believed to be involved in.

Late Friday night at the Fresh Fish House on 8 Mile and Wyoming on Detroit’s west side, the would-be thief used a sledgehammer to break a window and climbed inside.

“Then he jumped over this counter here, flipped over, went inside for two minutes, he couldn’t do nothing and come right back out,” said owner Rod Almas.

About an hour later, early Saturday morning, the same man broke into the BP gas station on 8 Mile in Ferndale. Using his van as a battering ram, he backed up three times into the front of the store, finally breaking a window and climbing inside.

“Man, it is crazy out there,” Almas said.

Police are investigating whether or not the same man tried to break into Big Daddy’s Liquor on Joy Road on Wednesday.

Detroit police started following him, and then he crashed his vehicle two blocks away at Cathedral and Faust. That suspect is in police custody and is being treated at a local hospital.

Meanwhile back at Fresh Fish Market: “The worst part is he came out with nothing,” Almas said.

“The siren was so loud, he just couldn’t do nothing and he ran right out,” Almas said.

He also left the BP emptied handed, according to an employee.
