RAPID CITY, S.D. — The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is hosting an event Saturday to give kids a chance to experience their own moon landing.
The NASA Apollo 50th Next Giant Leap Student Challenge is for middle and high school students wanting to try their hand in aerospace.
Starting at 9:30 a.m. at East Middle School kids will compete to fly a UAV drone with a simulated moon lander and land it on a map of the moon.
According to Dr. Jason Ash, an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering at SDSM&T, “The competition map is actually a satellite image of the Apollo 11 moon landing. You can see the lander, you can see Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong’s footsteps. So that’s the first part is flying the drone, the second is using Lego robots to complete various missions.”
The event is free to the public and runs until 4 p.m.
