Greenville, N.C. — A Greenville police officer was hospitalized following a fatal shooting at a Greenville townhome early Tuesday morning.
Around 4 a.m., officers responded to a report of a breaking and entering at 2244A Brookville Drive. The residents said they heard a loud crash and the sound of a man attempting to break into their house. According to officers, they called 911 and hid until officers could arrive.
Once police were at the scene, an officer encountered the break-in suspect in the street.
According to police, the suspect ignored the officer’s commands, and a physical fight broke out. The officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect. Medical crews treated the suspect at the scene, but he died as a result of his injuries.
The officer was recovering from non-life-threatening injuries on Monday at Vidant Medical Center.
The identities of the officer and suspect were not provided.
The shooting is under investigation by the SBI. The officer will be placed on administrative leave per protocol.
