According to Salinas Police, the vegetation fire in the empty lot across from Natividad has been contained as of about 6 p.m. Saturday.

The vegetation fire broke out along Constitution Boulevard before 3:30 p.m. Cars slowed to watch the flames.

The fire was located in an empty lot between Creekbridge Fitness Center and the Constitution Soccer Complex on the east side of Constitution.

Salinas police and firefighters responded to the scene.

According to Commander Jim Arensdorf, eight police units responded to the fire for traffic control and pre-emptive evacuation. Fire sent multiple engines.

Police evacuated the adjoining apartments and businesses as a safety measure; no one was injured in the process.

“The fire is out,” Arensdorf said, “But engines will stay on the scene as these fires can smolder.”

The lot measures 42 acres, per the Salinas Regional Sports Authority.
