Gov. Newsom should leave
public health to experts
Re: “Newsom comment links state vaccination, abortion debates” (Opinion section, Eastbaytimes.com, June 5):
Well, Gov. Newsom, there you go again! His ambivalent comments related to Senate Bill 276 essentially indicating his opposition to the bill are ignorant and inexcusable.
Working in the field of public health for over 20 years, I understand the need for personal decision-making, but the need for the “common good” and the need to follow the best advice of public health officials are important.
The bill’s author, Dr. Richard Pan, is a pediatrician who is attempting to incrementally change current law (SB 277) to limit the number of medical exemptions by requiring review of all by public health officials.
The sad observations are that government intervention is required to “reign in” corrupt physicians who grant fake exemptions and that creative physicians who will evade the bill/law will essentially render it unenforceable.
Newsom should leave public health to the experts and quit pandering to a cohort of his base.
